A Dress, A Dream, A Community

The Story Behind Our Prom Closet Initiative

What began as a simple act of care inside a classroom has grown into a community tradition rooted in compassion, dignity, and celebration.

In 2012, our publisher, Daisy Gonzalez, was a teacher at La Joya ISD when she noticed something that didn’t sit right with her. Several of her students were planning to skip prom, not because they didn’t want to go, but because they simply couldn’t afford it. Between the cost of dresses, suits, shoes, makeup, and senior year expenses, prom had become a luxury out of reach for many.

And it wasn’t just the girls. Some of the boys were quietly opting out too, unable to afford suits and the added costs that come with such a milestone event.

Daisy saw a problem, and more importantly, she saw an opportunity to make a difference.

With the help of her sisters, Yirla and Leslie, she launched her very first prom dress drive. That year, they collected over 60 dresses. What stood out most wasn’t just the number, but the impact. Girls who weren’t even her students would shyly stop by her classroom, asking if they could have a dress. Word spread quickly, and what started as a small effort became something much bigger.

Year after year, the initiative continued to grow.

Although Daisy is no longer in the classroom, the mission never left. Her sister Leslie, who is still a teacher, now carries on the effort through a dedicated “prom closet” at her school. Each year, the closet is filled, and each year, it is emptied again by students in need. And so, each year, it must be refilled.

Together, Daisy, Yirla, and Leslie have continued this tradition for over 14 years, collecting more than 100 dresses annually, along with suits, jackets, and accessories, ensuring that every student has the chance to feel confident, celebrated, and included.

What makes this initiative even more special is the community behind it.

From friends donating their once-loved gowns to strangers dropping off formal wear throughout the year, the support has been constant. Even outside of prom season, community members continue to reach out, asking how they can contribute.

It’s a reminder that when a community comes together, small acts of kindness can create a lasting impact.

Today, through The Valley Wedding Pages platform, this mission continues to grow, bridging the world of weddings and formalwear with a deeper purpose: giving every student the opportunity to experience one of the most memorable nights of their lives.

We invite you to be part of this story.

As you celebrate your own milestones, whether it’s a wedding, a special event, or a season of life, consider giving your formal wear a second moment. Your donation could be the reason a student walks into prom feeling confident, seen, and celebrated.

Because every student deserves their night.
