Hidden in South McAllen lies the historic Quinta Mazatlan, a elegant adobe home surrounded by lush plants, charming birds, and hundreds of palm trees, where countless events including fundraisers to elegant weddings have been hosted.
First built in the 1930’s by Jason Chilton Matthews, Quinta Mazatlan was greatly influenced by the Spanish architecture of Mazatlan, Mexico, and was considered the “Crossroads of the Western Hemisphere”.Over the next 30 years, the Rio Grande Valley’s natural habitats became few; and a hurricane left the home in shambles. Thanks to the dedication of the next owners, Frank and Marilyn Schultz, Quinta Mazatlan was restored, with cantera patios and exotic foliage planted throughout the property. In 1985, the adobe home was recognized by the Texas Historical Commission. The home was then purchased by the City of McAllen, expanding their mission of preserving natural habitats in the area.
In 2006, Quinta Mazatlan opened its arms to the public and became a member of the World Birding Center. Since 2007, Quinta Mazatlan has hosted special events and become the dream location for brides and grooms who are looking for a unique venue to celebrate their nuptials. Quinta Mazatlan have even been awarded with accolades such as The Valley Wedding Pages Best Outdoor Venue 2021, Best Venue – Upper Valley 2021 and 2022, and Best Photo Shoot Location 2021 and 2023.
Today, Quinta Mazatlan continues to be a safe haven for native birds and butterflies. The historic landmark’s mission is the conservation of natural habitats and native vegetation, giving citizens the education needed to preserve the Valley’s natural elements. Quinta Mazatlan is a special oasis in urban McAllen and will continue to serve the Rio Grande Valley for any special occasion.
