A Top Tier For One Year

A Top Tier For One Year

Cake Designer: Cynthia's Cakes LLC

Dating back as far as the 19th century, most newlyweds would often preserve and save the top tier of their wedding cake for a special occasion at a later date, often the christening of their first child when babies were born within the first year of marriage. Today, many couples often prefer to enjoy the top tier of their wedding cake on their first anniversary. If you want to enjoy that delicious confection again on your one year anniversary, here are some tips to ensure the proper preservation.

  • Once your cake is cut, have your caterer or a trusted family member remove any garnishes, especially flowers and stems and greenery. Let the top tier sit in the freezer so that the outer layer of frosting can set.
  • Loosely wrap the cake in freezer-safe plastic wrap. Use as many layers as possible, you want to ensure no freezer burn occurs!
  • Place the wrapped cake in an airtight container or a mall cake box, then wrap the entire container in additional plastic wrap to seal it from moisture. Keep this in the back of the freezer.

When you are ready to bring out your cake for your anniversary, take these steps to ensure your cake is ready to indulge in.

  • Take the wrapped container out of the freezer and let it thaw in the fridge overnight.
  • Then simply leave it at room temperature on the counter for about 6 hours unwrapped, and then dig in!

If the thought of eating a year-old cake doesn’t appeal to you, reach out to your original wedding cake baker and have them create a small one-tier version of your wedding cake to enjoy on your anniversary!
